Liposuction

by admin on November 18, 2009

Liposuction has been around for thirty years or so, but it has only become extremely popular in the past ten to 15 years. Liposuction refers to fat (That’s what the “lipo” part means.) and suction. In other words, fat is vacuumed off various areas of the body in an attempt to rebalance the figure.

Liposuction can be used in ways that people don’t normally think of, like in the area under the chin. But usually liposuction is done on what women (the overwhelming majority of patients) consider “problem areas.” A generation ago, liposuction was reserved for people who had very stubborn areas of fat that were resistant to diet and exercise. In other words, while a person may have been able to lose weight, he or she was unable to lose fat in certain areas. In women this is usually in the hips and thighs, where women naturally store fat due to hormonal and genetic influence.

Liposuction is a major procedure and should be performed by a qualified, skilled surgeon who has plenty of experience in the techniques used. Candidates for liposuction have an initial consultation with the surgeon, who closely examines the affected areas and makes notes on exactly where the patient believes the problems to be. The surgeon may estimate what volume of fat will be removed.

On the day of the surgery, the surgeon will draw directly on the patient’s skin where the incisions will take place, and where the fat is to be extracted from. The patient is placed under general anesthesia for the operation. In the “old days,” the surgeon would use a fairly wide diameter suction device to remove fat in a manner very similar to vacuuming.

Today, surgeons are able to customize the procedure more, with smaller vacuuming devices that allow for greater precision. While complications from liposuction are rare, they should definitely be taken into account by the patient as well as the doctor.
